There are mixed feelings when September rolls round and school is about to start again. Whether that’s because you’re the child returning to school with new classes, new teachers or new friends. You could be the anxious mum, nervous for their child’s first day, or you’re the teacher welcoming back children in their masses.
In 2020, 3% of people had experienced Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) at some point in their life. With COVID restrictions posing a barrier to many of us getting our winter sun, could we be more likely to suffer from SAD? And how do we combat this if it’s not so easy to just hop on a plane to our favourite sunny destination?
Parents, especially, know the importance of sleep – for yourself and for your offspring. The day after a wakeful night can feel like you’re dragging yourself through thick mud, wading towards the chance to clamber back into bed again. Then you lie there, unable to fall asleep, thinking of all the things that must be achieved the following day.
Juniperus communis, or common juniper, is a slow-growing small coniferous tree or shrub, with green or blue-green needles that appear in whorls of three. You will know this plant as the culprit behind one of our very favourite tipples – gin.

Having just experienced a record-breaking heatwave in mid-July, many of us here in the UK may be feeling particularly sleep deprived, on top of being generally hot and bothered, sticky, itchy and enormously resentful of the sun we’ve been begging to see for months. The ambient temperature is known to be one of the most important factors that can affect our sleep. This is because the body itself goes through thermal changes as part of the sleep process.
